How to trim audio

1. Add a recording. Drop in a voice memo, podcast, song or any other audio file.
2. Trim automatically or by hand. Press Auto-trim silence to find where the sound really starts and ends, or drag the handles and type exact start and end times.
3. Add fades (optional). A short fade in and fade out gives a polished start and finish.
4. Save. Choose MP3 or WAV and press Trim audio.

Automatic silence removal

Recordings often begin with a few seconds of dead air while someone presses record, and end with silence while they reach for the stop button. The auto-trim feature scans the file in 10-millisecond steps and finds the first and last moments that are louder than the silence threshold. It then leaves a small 50 ms margin so the first word or note isn't clipped.

Which threshold should you use?

• −60 dB treats only true digital silence as silent. Good for music and clean studio recordings.
• −45 dB (default) is a good balance for most voice recordings.
• −30 dB also trims room noise, hum and quiet breathing. Good for noisy phone recordings.

After auto-trim, you can still adjust the selection by hand before saving.

Trimmer or cutter: which should you use?

Use the Audio Trimmer when you want to keep one continuous section and only tidy up the edges, such as removing silence or cutting a long intro. Use the Audio Cutter when you need to remove something from the middle of a recording and join the parts back together.
